Qualitative Data
Expressed in words. Written description of thoughts, feelings and opinions of participants.

ADV - Qualitative Data
Provides detailed information - meaningful insight into ppts views. Has greater external validity.

DISADV - Qualitative Data
Difficult to analyse. Hard to summarise statistically - so cannot identify patterns or compare data. Means conclusions are based on subjective interpretations.

Quantitative Data
Expressed in numbers and statistics.

ADV - Quantitative Data
Relatively simple to analyse. Comparisons between groups can be drawn easily. More objective and less open to bias.

DISADV - Quantitative Data
May fail to represent "real-life". Much narrower in scope and meaning.

Primary Data
Original data specifically collected first-hand by the researcher.

ADV - Primary Data
Can be designed to specifically target the information required.

DISADV - Primary Data
Requires time and effort for researcher. Requires considerable planning, preparation and resources.

Secondary Data
Already exists beforehand and is general information on the area of investigation.

ADV - Secondary Data
Inexpensive and easily accessed, requiring minimal effort. Prevents researcher from having to gain their own primary data.

DISADV - Secondary Data
May be substantial variation in the quality and accuracy. May be outdated or incomplete. Might not quite reach researcher's needs or objectives.
