Certain fields such as customer number, item code, quantity etc must be present.

Format check (also called picture check)
Data is entered in a certain arrangement/pattern e.g. code may have a pattern of 2 letters followed by 4 numbers.

Value entered must fall between an upper and lower limiteg A card expiry date must have a month number between 1 and 12, and date must be after today

Batch header checks
The total number of records in the batch are calculated and included in the batch header . The file is transferred and the total number of records recalculated and compared with batch header.

Ensures the data entered is of the correct type eg numeric real or integer, text, currency, data, time

Ensures that the number of characters in the string is sensible

File lookup check
If the customer has filled in their customer number, the computer can look this up on the customer file and display the name and address. The data entry operator can check that it tallies.

A check digit is a number, appended to the end of the code number, used to check the whole of a code has been entered correctly.

Verification is making sure that data has been accurately transferred or transcribed (copied) form one medium to another (eg paper to magnetic disk) or one computer to another computer (eg email)
