what is a hydrocarbon?
a hydrocarbon is a molecule made up of Hydrogen and Carbon atoms ONLY
1 of 9
What is rude oil made up of?
crude oil is made up a hydrocarbons
2 of 9
How do we refine crude oil?
we refine crude oil by separating it into molecules with similar number of carbon atoms
3 of 9
What is Fractional Distillation?
Fractional Distillation is the separating out of the different chemicals in crude oil.
4 of 9
How dose fractional distillation work?
Crude oil is pumped into a cylinder that is hot at the bottom and cool at the top. Substances was high boiling points condense at the bottom. the substances (fractions) are separated off and used for different things.
5 of 9
What are the characteristics of large molecules?
-high boiling point -high viscosity -does not flow easily -not very flamable
6 of 9
what are the characteristics of small molecules?
-low boiling point -low viscosity -flows easily - very flamable
7 of 9
what does Viscosity mean?
Viscosity means the thickness of the molecules/liquid
8 of 9
What is the problem with fossil fuels?
when burned fossil fuels release harmful gases into the air causing things like global warming.
