Crossing Membranes

?
What is a passive process?
It doesn't require energy. E.g. facilliated diffusion
1 of 10
What is active transport?
Requires ATP (energy) to pump a substance against a concentration gradient.
2 of 10
What is Diffusion?
The movement of molecules across a partially permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration down a concentration gradient.
3 of 10
What are 6 factors of diffsuion?
1. Temperature. 2. Concentration gradient. 3. Surface area. 4. Distance/thickness. 5. Molecule size. 6. Movement/Stirring.
4 of 10
What happens to large/polar/charged molecules?
Need to be transported across the membrane via facilitated diffusion that uses a channel or carrier protein.
5 of 10
Can anything pass through the cell membrane?
Not everything. Its easier for small or non-polar substances to pass through membrane but large or polar substances cannot and require a channel or carrier protein to transport them across.
6 of 10
What is facilitated diffusion?
Is a passive process that uses carrier and channel proteins to transport substances across the membrane.
7 of 10
How does the diffusion path/distance affect diffusion?
The shorter the distance of diffusion the faster the rate of diffusion and the more likeliness the substance is to diffuse.
8 of 10
What is Pinoendocytosis?
A liquid entering a cell. Pino = Liquid. Endo = Entering.
9 of 10
What is phagoexocytosis?
A solid exiting a cell. Phago = Solid. Exo = Exiting.
