Haney et. al (1973) - Aim
To look at the processes which motivate aggressive and submissive behaviour within a prison.

24 male college students. Volunteer - advert in newspaper. $15 per day. 22 participated, 2 stand by.

Mock prison created in basement of psychology building of Stanford Uni. Prisoners in prison for 24 hrs per day. Guards worked three-man 8 hr shifts. Administered uniforms.

Stopped after 6 days due to negative behaviour. Deindividuation - loss of self-identity. Pathological prisoner syndrome - rebellion then obedience and negative emotions. Pathology of power - used power and authority & distressed it was stopped early.

Some guards were good, some were bad so can't have just been situation. Free will.

Some guards were good, some were bad so didn't change behaviour and had more morals. Situations don't determine everything.

Usefulness
Shows people in society will sometimes manipulate power or become brutal because they have authority. Expert witness to defend soldiers. Classes to inspire children to have real heroism like role models instead of superheroes or unattainable ones.

Socially sensitive research
Milgram used deception and pps showed extreme signs of stress. Could be used to manipulate power and cause people to act immoraly. Zimbardo had no protection from harm. Could be used for people to exploit their power and use as an excuse.

Anger Management
1. Cognitive preparation - offender identifies situations that serves as anger triggers. Stage 2 - still acquisition. Offenders learn different relaxation techniques. Stage 3 - Application practice. Applied in real life.

Anger Management - Definition
Rationale for treating anger is the assumption that anger is the cause of violent crime. Novaco (1975) suggests some violent offences occur when offenders express anger towards inappropriate targets.

Anger Management - Evidence
Successful in effectiveness of CALM Ireland (2000). Conducting natural experiment comapred so prisoners who had complete calm to a control group of 37 men. Used self report to assess effectivenesses.

Restorative Justice
Takes part in police station. Introductions then offender asked about crime and opinions. Supporters give opinion. Victim expresses opinion and crime impact. Agree on contract on how to right the wrongs.

Restorative Justice - Definition
Victim & Offender brought together so victim can explain impact of crime. Help victim to understand why and recognises needs of victims and offender can improve.

Restorative Justice - Evidence
Lawrence Sherman & Heather Strang (2007) - internet search to identify academic articles into R8. 36 out of 424 hits showed offenders who participated in RJ compared with ones who didn't suggest it works in property and violent crimes.
