Aims of sentencing
Retribution (punishment), deterrence of individuals and of others, rehabilitation, Protection of society, reparation (put things right for the victim)

Custodial sentence
Immediate is when the offence is so serious that neither a fine or community sentence can be justified, suspended is when when the sentence is not activated until D commits further offences

Community sentences
Unpaid work, supervision by probation officer, prohibited activity, curfew, alcohol and drug treatment

Financial sentences
Fines, must take into account D's ability to pay, $5000 max for mags, unlimited for crown, Compensation orders can be made to the victim for injuries or property damage

Discharge
Absolute - imposes no penalty, conditional - if the offender commits a further offences the original offence is resentenced
