Where do laws come from?
Laws come from members of parliament make the laws once they have been democratically elected.

How do social values and norms come to the law making process?
They come from: Petitions, religion, social upheaval.

What are pressure groups?
Groups that put pressure on the government to make or change laws.

What does a law start off as?
A command paper.

How does a command paper become a draft bill?
Command papers -> green papers -> white papers -> draft bills.

What happens to a draft bill?
It goes to the house of lords and house of commons. If they agree it moves straight to royal ascent.

If the house of commons and house of lords don't agree with it?
It goes on to it's first reading. It then goes for a second reading. Then the public bill committee. Then third bill reading and lastly to royal ascent.

What happens in the first bill reading stage?
The bill is read aloud in parliament.

What happens in the second bill reading stage?
The main points are discussed.

What happens in the public bill committee stage?
Checked line by line and changes are made. (if necessary)

What happens in the third bill reading stage?
The bill's final form is debated.

Once the third bill reading stage has taken place it goes on to royal ascent. What are the stages after this?
Royal ascent -> commencement orders -> statutory instruments -> regulations, rules, orders and guidance.

What is common law?
Common law is law that has been decided and enforced in court as opposed to law which is made by parliament.
