What is globalisation?
Globalisation refers to the increasing interconnectedness of societies, meaning what happens in one lacility isshaped by distant events and vice versa.

He suggests there is an increasing interconnectedness of crime across national borders. The spread of transnational organised crime has created new opportunities for crime.

He suggests there is now a global criminal economy worth over £1 trillion per annum, taking a number of forms such as: 1. Cyber crime 2. Trafficking 3. Smuggling 4. Cyber crimes 5. Drugs trade

What are the two sides of the global criminal economy?
The supply side and the demand side, part of the reason for the scale of transnational organised crime is the demand for its products and services, however the global criminal economy could not function without a supply side.

Why are third-world countries such large suppliers of illegal exports?
Countries such as Columbia have large populations of impoverished peasants. Forthese groups, drug cultivation is an attractive option that requires little investment for a product commanding higher prices than traditional crops.

How has globalisation created new insecurities and produced a new mentality of 'risk conciousness'
The increased number of economic migrants and asylum seekers has given rise to anxieties among populations in Western countries about the risks of crime and disorder and the need to protect their borders.

What has this 'risk conciousness' caused?
It has caused the intensification of social control e.g. the UK has toughened its brder control regulations. Other European countries have introduced fences, CCTV and thermal imaging devices.

What does the socialist Ian Taylor argue globalisation has caused?
He argues that globalisation has led to changes in the pattern and extent of crime. By giving free rein to market forces, globalisation has created greater inequality and rising crime.
