Too much crime threatens bonds of society, and too little is repressive and prevents change

Conformity, Innovation, Ritualism, Retreatism & Rebellion.

Definiton of Conformity--
Individuals see they have to work hard to get their dream, so achieve it legitimately

Definition of Innovation--
Individuals see the need for money success so use illegitimate means to get there, such as fraud.

Definition of Ritualism--
Give up on goals and get stuck in dead end jobs, e.g middle class office workers

Definition of Retreatism--
Individuals reject legitimate and illegitimate means and become drop outs. E.g. psychotics, tramps, alcoholics, drug addicts.

Definition of Rebelion--
Rebel against current means to get new ways of success

What is a Critisism of Mertons Strain Theorey?
Takes official crime statistics at face value, as official statistic over represent working class crime, so Merton sees crime as a working class phenomena.

What do Marxists say about Merton?
Merton ignores how the ruling class enforce laws that benefit the rich and not the poor

What is a critisism of Functionalist theorys?
Explaining the functions of crime doesn’t explain what caused them in the first place.
