Why are crude oils we get from fractional distillation not good fuels?
There long chain hydrocarbons. They have big molecules. They have high boiling points. They are not easy to burn.
1 of 5
How can long chain hydrocarbons be changed into short chain?
large hydrocarbons can be broken down by cracking. we use a catalyst in this process so its also known as catalyst cracking.
2 of 5
what is the method of cracking hydrocarbons?
1. its done in a cat-cracker 2. large molecule crude oils are heated strongly to turn hydrocarbons into gas 3. the gas is passed over a catalyst to speed up thermal decomposition 4. Thermal decomposition splits large molecules to form smaller molecul
3 of 5
What happens to large hydrocarbon molecules?
They are vaporized over a hot catalyst, this breaks chemical bonds and forms smaller hydrocarbons.
4 of 5
What are smaller hydrocarbons used for?
FUELS AND POLYMERS.
