What go through the process of cracking?
The fractions that are produced by the distillation of crude oil
1 of 10
What is cracking?
A chemical reaction which produces smaller hydrocarbons by breaking the chemical bonds
2 of 10
Why would we needs to use cracking for crude oil?
Large hydrocarbon molecules are not efficent as they cannot flow easily and are difficult to ignite
3 of 10
What happens during cracking?
The fractions are heated to vaporise them and then are either passed over a hot catalyst or mixed with steam and heated to a high temp
4 of 10
What are the products of cracking>
Alkenes
5 of 10
What is the general formula for alkenes?
CnH(2)n
6 of 10
What are alkenes?
Unsaturated hydrocarbons
7 of 10
What is differnet about their diplayed formula?
They always have a double bond
8 of 10
Why are alkenes useful?
They can react with oxygen to make fuels and make ethanol and ploymers
9 of 10
How do you test for unsaturation?
Using bromine water which is normally a brown colour it becomes colourless when shaken with alkene but remains the shame when shaken with alkane
