What is Covalent Bonding?
A bond between two or more non metals
1 of 8
How do the atoms bond?
They share electrons in an attempt to get full outer shells
2 of 8
Do Covalent molecules transfer electricity and why?
No, because there are no free electrons to transfer the electric charge through
3 of 8
Name an example of a Covalent bonded molecule...
You could have had: Hydrogen (H2), Water (H2O), Ammonia (NH3), Methane (CH4)
4 of 8
What properties do Covalent molecules have?
Covalent compounds are usually gases or liquids with low melting points or boiling points and they don't conduct electricity
5 of 8
Why do they have low melting/boiling points?
There are very few bonds to break, which require very little energy to break
6 of 8
How can you easily find which non metals should bond to give full outer shells?
Look at which column in the Periodic Table the non-metals are under
7 of 8
How many electrons are shared in a single covalent bond? 1, 2 or 4
Two Electrons
