Resistant rock, less resistant rock. Water erodes less resistant rock. Then forced up and over resistant rock.

Resistant rock on top, makes overhang. Undercutting in less resistant rock. Plunge pool underneath.

River forced around a land formation resulting in a fast current on outside but other side has lost energy and deposition happens.

How is Oxbow lake formed
Over time deposition in a meander separates the lake and river reconnects on a straighter route.

How are floodplains formed
Formed by deposition during flood. Heaviest materials first lighter ones are further away from river.
