A posteriori is an argument based on the idea that things are proven through experience.

A priori is an argument based on knowledge independent of experience.

What is contingent?
Contingent is something that has a beginning and depends on something else for the fact it came into existence.

What is empiricism?
Empiricism is the philosophical theory that all knowledge is derived from experience. Experience always means sensory experience, i.e. experience that depends on one or more of the five senses.

What does ex nihilo mean?
Ex nihilo means out of nothing.

What is fideism?
Fideism means that religious belief cannot be justified by rational means, only faith.

What is the role of God in the cosmological argument with regards to Aquinas' first way?
God is the first mover. He started off the motion in the world. Shown by Aquinas' first way and rejection of infinite regress.

What is the role of God in the cosmological argument with regards to Aquinas' second way?
God is the first cause. He started of the cause and effect in the world. Shown by Aquinas' second way and rejection of infinite regress. Could be supported by the Big Bang if God caused this event.

What is the role of God in the cosmological argument with regards to Aquinas' third way?
God is the necessary being. He therefore does not rely on anuthing else to exist. Shown by Aquinas' third way and Copleston.

Name 3 features of God...
God is eternal (implied by necessary being), he is transcendent (implied by God not needing a cause) and he is omnipotent (implied by the fact God is the first cause, first mover etc).

What is a cause in fieri?
Cause in fieri leads to things becoming what they are but having started the process are no longer involved. E.g. exsistence of father.

WHat is a cause in esse?
Cause in esse is a cause that brings a thing into being but that cause must be sustained for the thing to continue. e.g. existence of water. (God is generally said to be a cause in esse)/
