Control Measures

Eliminate the use of the harmful substance and use of a safer one. For instance, swap high VOC oil-based paint for a lower VOC water-based paint

Use a safer form of the product. Is the product available ready-mixed? Is there a lower strength option that will still do the job?

Change the work method to emit less of the substance. For instance, applying paint with a brush releases fewer VOC into the air than spraying paint. Wet grinding produces less dust then dry grinding.

Enclose the work area so that the substance does not escape. This can mean setting up a tented area or closing doors.

Use extraction or filtration (e.g. a dust bag) in the work area.

Keep operatives in the area to a minimum

Employers must provide appropriate PPE.
