Social Approach - Assumptions
The Key Assumptions for the Social Approach are: 1) The interactions with others and how they affect the way we feel and/or behave. 2) How we make sense of ourselves/judge outselves (self-perception/identity)

How far we act according to our own free will, how far factors in a social environment may determine our behaviour. Milgram/R&H: Challenge our belief that we act autonomously. Milgram: Giving authority figures. R&H: Factors which support a tyranny.

Can offer possible solutions to problems in the real world. Milgram: Insights into behaviours of people in positions of power. Piliavin: Bystander behaviour in an emergency situation.

Demand Characteristics could be a problem. Milgram: P's may have guessed aim of experiment and so delivered more shocks. R&H: P's playing up to cameras.

Validity over time (concurrent) Value? Historical validity - Milgram: would P's behave in the same way today? Piliavin: would people react differently today?

Cultural differences in behaviour (Androcentric and Ethnocentric). Leads to results describing people, even if ethnocentric experiment. Piliavin: London underground? R&H: prisoners in USA? Milgram: Australian P's deliver a full set of shocks?
