State the order of planets from the sun
Sun-->Mercury-->Venus-->Earth-->Mars-->Jupiter-->Saturn-->Uranus-->Neptune
1 of 15
What are 'light years'?
The distance light travels in one year.
2 of 15
How fast does light travel every second in meters?
300,000,000m/s
3 of 15
What was the geocentric model?
That Earth was at the centre of the universe and everything else orbited it.
4 of 15
What was the heliocentric model?
The sun is at the centre of the universe. Wasn't entirely correct
5 of 15
Describe the evidence for the Geocentric model
When we stay still on Earth everything appears to move around us. Stars have been emitting light but they have been moving too, this made it seem like stars move around us as the stars and planets appear to move in the sky.
6 of 15
What model angered the church?
The heliocentric model
7 of 15
What disproved the geocentric model?
When Galileo used a telescope to observe Jupiter he found 4 stars clung to Jupiter and move in the opposite directio to other stars. These were moons and this proved if four moons orbit Jupiter not everything orbits Earth. Only disproved geocentric
8 of 15
True or false: Galileo said that the heliocentric model is correct and this provided evidence for the heliocentric model
False, it only disproved the geocentric model.
9 of 15
What did the first astronomers of the universe use to do what?
They used their naked eye and mapped positions of stars, comets and planets.
10 of 15
What are our eyes good for and why can we see planets?
They are good for detecting visibl light, stars emit visible light and some of this bounces off planets, these reflect light and this is why we can see planets
11 of 15
What do telescopes do?
They magnify images so they can be seen in more detail
12 of 15
What are some limitations of telescopes?
They are limited by atmospheric pollution and light pollution. Across the world there is a smog like pollution and the pollution obscures the light coming in from stars and planets. In deserts there is less light pollution so can see space clearer.
13 of 15
Give one advantage and disadvantage of space telescopes
They can see further but are more expensive
14 of 15
We can also use telescopes to take photos, why is this beneficial?
It allows us to zoom in for more detail, it also allows us to monitor movement over time. We can control the shutter speed so we can expose the film for longer to collect more light from faint stars.
