Core Biology: Variation: Define 'Variation'
Differences in physical characteristics within a species
1 of 7
What issues would arise if there was NO variation?
If a disease affected one it would affect them all. If the environmental area changed then it would affect all of them and they could die.
2 of 7
Name the three causes of variation
Sexual reproduction/genetics (inherit characteristics randomly) genetic mutations (Made up of a 4 letter code, sequence determines characteristics, sometimes may mutate) environment. Another cause is both
3 of 7
What is continuous variation?
Between two extremes and the values can be anything in-between
4 of 7
Give two examples of continuous variation
Height & weight
5 of 7
What is discontinuous variation?
You are set in one category, can't be in-between. Either or measurements
6 of 7
How can you tell the difference between discontinuous and continuous variation?
If the feature can be measured then it's continuous, if it can't, it's discontinuous.
