where the oceanic plate subducts (goes underneath) the continental plate... this is because the oceanic plate is MORE DENSE (3.0) than the continental (2.7)

this is created by the SUBDUCTION ZONE... the ocean becomes deeper (6000m-11,000m)... they are long and narrow where the continental plate has buckled.

fold mountain chain

these are mountain chains that are crested when the CONTINENTAL plate buckles and sediment/sedimentary rock builds up on the side of the continental plate.... for example, the Andes (coast of south america)

the point where the oceanic plate subducts at 45 degrees underneath the continental plate... faults & fractures are created in the oceanic plate which causes EARTHQUAKES... *huge amounts of pressure* (oceanic is subducted between 30-70 degrees)

the subduction of the oceanic plate means that the oceanic plate starts to melt... this means PLUTONS are released (igneous rock which is less dense + so rises)... these create intrusions (eg sills) which push up fold mountains & create VOLCANOES.

the DENSER of the oceanic plates subduct under the other oceanic plate... eg in the Atlantic, the North American plate subducts under the Caribbean Plate- forms Antilles (island arcs)

these are volcanic island that form when the oceanic plate melts and magma rises (plutons).

makes LITTLE or NO subduction because both the plates have the same densities... for example, the eurasion plate + african plate colliding over the past 40 YEARS have created the Alps.

conservative (transform) plate boundary

when 2 plates slide past each other (transform)... no volcanic activity... HUGE amounts of pressure can be built up because of FRICTION between plates... a SLIP can cause an earthquake... eg North American plate + Pacific plate = San Andreas Fault
