Somewhere other, different, mysterious. It is often threatening or violent, sometimes sexually enticing. Often a prison.

Clashing time periods
Seems although the past is moving into the present. A past that should be over and done with suddenly erupts within the present and deranges it.

Scenes of extreme threat and isolation-either physical or psychological-are always happening or about to happen, often a young woman in danger.

Paticularly doubt about the supernatural and the spiritual. Gothic seeks to creat in our minds the possibility that there may be things beyond human power, reason and knowledge.

The Supernatural
Ghosts, death, decay, madness, curses, etc. are use to explore fear of the unknown and what lack of control we have as humans over the unknown.

The Sublime
An overpowering sense of the greatness and power of nature. Sublime moments lead us to consider the place of humanity in the universe, and the power exhibited in the world.
