Why do farmers control energy flow?
To reduce the amount og energy lost from food chains to increase productivity and make energy transfer more efficient.
1 of 7
Herbicides
Kills weeds competing with agricultural crops for energy. Reducing competition means crops have more energy to grow faster and larger.
2 of 7
Fungicides
Kills fungal infections that damage agricultural crops. Crops use less energy for fighting infection and more energy for growth.
3 of 7
Insecticides
Kills insect pests that eat and damage crops so less biomass is lost.
4 of 7
Natural predators
Introduced to ecosystem to eat pest species so that crops lose less energy and biomass.
5 of 7
Fertilisers
Chemicals replaces soil minerals so that crops have minerals needed for growth.
6 of 7
Intensive farming
Strictly controlling the conditions in which livestock lives in so that more energy is used for growing and less for other activities. Efficiency of energy conversion is increased so more biomass produced and productivity increased.
