What is apical dominance?
The growing apical bud at the tip of the shoot inhibits growth of lateral buds further down the shoot.
1 of 7
What would happen if you broke the shoot tip (apex) off a plant?
The plant starts to grow side branches from lateral buds that were previously dormant.
2 of 7
What other factor may cause this effect instead of auxin?
When exposed to oxygen, cells on the cut end of the stem could have produced a hormone that promoted lateral bud growth.
3 of 7
How did they come to the conclusion that normal auxin concentrations inhibit growth?
They applied a ring of auxin transport inhibitor below the apex of the shoot. The lateral buds grow.
4 of 7
How did they think abscisic acid levels were kept high in the bud?
High concentrations of auxin in the shoot may keep the abscisic acid levels high in the bud. Tip removed = abscisic acid levels drop and bud grows.
5 of 7
What hormone can override the apical dominance effect?
Directly applying cytokinin to buds can override the apical dominance effect.
6 of 7
What happened when giberellic acid (GA3) was added to plants?
They grew taller so gibberellin is responsible for plant growth.
