Controlling Body Temperature, Internal Conditions and Blood Glucose

Sections from B3 - 3. Think glucose, glucagon and glycogen people!

?
What function does the thermoregulatory centre have?
The thermoregulatory centre is sensitive to changes in the temperature of the blood.
1 of 8
Why is keeping your body temperature at about 37 degrees Celsius so important?
This is the temperature that ENZYMES work best to catalyse reactions in your body cells. Getting too hot could cause the enzymes to denature. Getting too cold will decrease the rate of enzyme-controlled reactions, reducing energy release.
2 of 8
What is hypothermia?
Hypothermia is when the core body temperature falls below the normal range.
3 of 8
What is the poisonous waste product that comes from the break-down of excess proteins?
Urea.
4 of 8
Which organ monitors the concentration of blood glucose?
The pancreas.
5 of 8
True or False: glycogen allows glucagon to be converted back into glucose.
FALSE. Glucagon allows glycogen to be converted back into glucose.
6 of 8
What does the body do if the blood glucose levels in the body get too high?
Insulin is secreted from the pancreas. The insulin allows glucose to move into the cells from the blood so that it can be used.
7 of 8
When blood glucose concentration is too low...
...the pancreas secretes glucagon, which breaks down glycogen stores in the liver. The glycogen is then converted into glucose.
