Slaves
Slaves weren't educated, it would allow them to think, and they would then be able to rise up. They have no rights and no representation in government. Segregation took place e.g. blacks sat on top of a balcony, whites therefore cant get germs.

Civil War
1861-1865. Confederates aginst Yankees, who were led by Lincoln-wanted to abolish slavery. When war was won, it was illegal to have slaves=economic disaster as people couldn't afford slaves.

Wall Street Crash/Depression
Everyone had invested in Stock market and when everyone took their money out, it crashed. 11,000 of 27,000 banks closed-goods couldn't be bought due to lack of money-affected farmers in particular.

Women
Fewer legal rights and oppurtunities=not equal to men. Expected to be domestic, servants for housework who were vlaued by children. In south, Southern Belle=pure, honored and protected.

1955-68 Civil Rights Act. Rosa Parks kicked it all off-wouldn't let a white person sit down. Nearly 100yrs after emancipation of slaves, there's still segregation e.g. KKK. Martin Luther assasinated.

Jim Crow Laws
1876-1960's. Many christians taught blacks were ebil and God supported racial segregation. Africans relegated to second class. Derogatory names-'niggas''coons' e.g.blacks can't show affection
