Consuming Resources Flashcards

?
Physical Resources
Natural Materials found at or below the Earth's surface, such as soil or rock.
1 of 13
Energy Resources
Resources used specifically for heat.
2 of 13
Minerals
Materials narmally quarried or mined from the ground in raw form. They are then heated and purified to become usable materials.
3 of 13
Biological Resources
Resources with a biological origin that have developed through growth and development eg trees.
4 of 13
Renewable Resources
These will never run out and can be used again and again
5 of 13
Non- Renewable
These are being used up and cannot be replaced eg Coal and Oil. Also referred to as finite resources
6 of 13
Biogas in India
Biogas plants convert organic matter such as wood chips or animal poop. This ferments which releases methane gas. This collects in a tank and can be burned to provide electricity for gas or cooking. Over 2.5m in India-provides 57% India's energy
7 of 13
Natural Gas in Europe
Used for electricity for heating and cooking. Collected under the North sea. Most of this has been used up and in '06, the UK imported 50% of its gas supplies. Expected to increase to 80% in 2020.
8 of 13
Food Security
Ability to obtain sufficient food on a day to day basis.
9 of 13
Predicted Food Needs by 2185
More Expensive food; more expensive fuel; climate change; water shortages; more migration; political instability; war.
10 of 13
Mad Man Malthus
'We're all doomed'. He believed that population grew exponentially but food production grew arithmetically. This means that population would eventually outstrip food supply. Pop. would decrease due to starvation- 'natural check'- war, disease, morality
11 of 13
Boserup
'Necessity is the mother of invention'. She believed that people wouldn't give in to war or famine and they would invent solutions to the problems.
12 of 13
Oil Consumption
Case Study: Canadian Tar Sands. Oil consumption is now over 87m barrels a day. Predicted to become 30m by 2030. Impossible to produce more than 100m barrels a day
