Conservation and Biodiversity

?
What is in situ conservation?
Protecting species in their natural habitat.
1 of 11
What are some methods of in situ conservation?
1. establishing protected areas such as national parks and wildlife reserves 2. Control/prevent introduction of species that threaten biodiversity 3. Protecting habitats 4. Promoting certain species 5. legal protection to endangered species
2 of 11
What are the advantages on in situ conservation?
Often both the species and their habitat are conserved. less disruptive than removing organisms from their habitats.
3 of 11
What is ex situ conservation?
Protecting a species nu removing part of the population from a threatened habitat and placing them in a new location. Often a last resort.
4 of 11
What are some methods of ex situ conservation?
1. Relocating organism to safer area. 2. Breeding organisms in captivity and relocating into wild when strong enough 3. Botanic gardens (conservation, research, display and education) 4. seed banks (source of seeds if natural reserves are destroyed)
5 of 11
What are the advantages of ex situ conservation?
Can be used to protect individual animals in a controlled environment so predators and hunting can be monitored easily. Can reintroduce species that have left an area.
6 of 11
What are the disadvantages of ex situ conservation?
only small number of individuals can be cared for. difficult and expensive to create and sustain the right environment. Many species cant breed successfully in captivity or don't adapt to new environment well.
7 of 11
What is the CBD (international agreement)
The Rio convention on biological diversity. 1. aims to develop international strategies on conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of plant and animal resources. 2. Guides governments on how to conserve biodiversity
8 of 11
What is the cites agreement? (international agreement)
Agreement to increase international cooperation in regulating trade in wild animals and plant specimens. Member countries made it illegal to kill endangered species. Helps conserve species by limiting trade through licensing.
9 of 11
What is the countryside stewardship scheme? (UK agreement)
1. introduced in 1991 to conserve wildlife and biodiversity and to improve and extend wildlife habitats by promoting management techniques to landowners. government offered 10 year agreement to pay landowners who followed techniques suggested.
10 of 11
What were some of the management techniques the government suggested to land owners?
Regenerate hedgerows, leave grassy margins around edges of fields where wildflowers could grow and to graze upland areas to keep down bracken.
