When a person genuinely accepts the group norms which results in a private and public change of behaviour/opinions
3 of 12
What is identification?

6 of 12
What are the two explanations for conformity?
Informational social influence (ISI) and Normative social influence (NSI)
7 of 12
What is informational social influence (ISI)?
A cognitive process which is about who has the better information (who is right and wrong). This is most likely to take place in a new situation where there is some ambiguity, crisis situations and when a person is regarded as being more of an expert
8 of 12
What is normative social influence (NSI)?
An emotional process which is all about norms. People do not like to appear foolish and prefer to gain social approval rather than being rejected. This is most likely to occur in situations with strangers or when with friends (social approval)
9 of 12
What is an evaluation point of informational social influence (ISI)?
Research support- Lucas et al asked students to answer mathematical questions that were easy or more difficult. There was greater conformity to incorrect answers that were more difficult as they didn't know the answer
10 of 12
What is an evaluation point of normative social influence (NSI)?
Individual differences- Some people have a greater need for affiliation (nAfilliators). McGhee and Teevan found that students high in need of affiliation were more likely to conform. Therefore the desire to be liked underlies conformity

What is an evaluation point of informational social influence (ISI) and normative social influence (NSI)?
They work together- More than often, both processes are involved. Therefore it isn't always possible to be sure which process is at work, which casts serious doubt over the two process operating independently
