Normative Social Influence, Informative Social Influence and Cognitive Dissonance

What is normative social influence?
An explanation of conformity that says we agree with the opinion of the majority because we want to be accepted, gain social approval and be liked. This may lead to compliance.

What is informative social influence?
An explanation of conformity that says we agree with the opinion of the majority because we believe it is correct. We accept it because we want to be correct as well. This may lead to internalisation.

What is cognitive dissonance?
It is a conflict in your mind when you have two contradictory ideas, this can lead to you feeling uneasy or unpleasant feelings. By reducing this conflict, by conforming, we reduce the cognitive dissonance.
