What was the reasoning behind the initial conflict?
Henry II refused to accept many of the freedoms enjoyed by the church.

What occurred in terms of the criminous clerks?
They were clergymen who had committed crime. 1 in 6 adult males could claim to be a clerk of holy order. However the church had its own right to punish a clerk or defend their position based on what they had done.

What occurred in terms of excommunication of the tenant in chief?
Becket argued that spiritual penalties were the matter of the church and not the crown. This came to a head at the Council of Woodstock.

What was the Council of Woodstock?
On July 1st 1163 Henry II summoned a Grand council of bishops etc. Becket excommunicated William of Eynsford a tenant in chief of the king.

What occurred during October 1163 and Jan 1164?
The Council of Westminster in October 1163 Henry demanded the bishops uphold the customs of England regarding the criminous clerks. Then at the constitutions of Clarendon in jan 1164 he once again demanded the same and Becket refused to give his seal

What happened at the Council of Northampton?
In October 1164 Becket was summoned and charged with a series of financial allegations like owing the crown £300 for example.

What happened following Beckets flee from England.
Henry made his case to Pope Alexander III and hinted if he didn't support Henry that he would come out in support of the anti-pope Paschal III.

What happened in June 1166?
Gilbert Foliot wrote a letter to the Pope with the bishops saying Henry was being reasonable and Beckted had been acting unjustly.

What happened by Christmas 1164?
Henry ordered the seizure of all of Beckts churches and revenues along with the clerks who joined him in exile.

Pope Alexander wrote to both of them in July 1168 but what did he say?
He suspended Beckets power until March 1169. In April 1169 Becket excommunicated Gilbert Foliot, Bishop of London and Joscelin Bishop of Salisbury. And in July 1170 threatened to but England under interdict.

What was the final straw that led to his murder?
In November 1170 he once again excommunicated people for their role in the coronation. Becket died on 29th Dec 1170.
