Computing storage

?
Why cant ROM be used to save files?
Because you cant write to the file, it holds the BIOS
1 of 22
Why cant RAM be used to save files?
Because when you switch your PC off the data is lost (volatile)
2 of 22
Why is secondary storage needed?
It is non-volatile storage that is used when primary storage is full
3 of 22
4 types of primary storage?
RAM, ROM, registers and cache
4 of 22
Whats held in secondary storage when not in use?
The Operating System, programs and data
5 of 22
What is tertiary storage?
Used to describe backups and archives of larges amounts of data in the long term
6 of 22
An example of tertiary storage
magnetic tape library
7 of 22
What is Magnetic storage?
Secondary storage that uses minute magnetic particles or 'domains' to store data
8 of 22
What is Solid State Storage?
Solid state media hold data using electronic switches. If the switch is open, it represents a '1', since it retains an electric charge. If it is closed, it represents a '0'
9 of 22
What is Optical Storage?
A laser beam burns tiny dark pits on to the surface of the optical disk. If a pit is present, this can represent a data bit being '1' and if no pit is present, this can represent a data bit being '0'.

Advantages of Magnetic Storage?
Cheapest, highest capacity, long read/write file life than SSD
11 of 22
Disadvantages of Magnetic Storage?
slower than solid, needs defragmenting
12 of 22
Advantages of Solid State?
faster, dont need fragmenting, more shock-proof than HDDs
13 of 22
Disadvantages of Solid State?
expensive, Less durable than a hard disk
14 of 22
Advantages of Optical Storage?
Cheap , Very portable
15 of 22
Disadvantages of Optical Storage?
slowest, lowest capacity
16 of 22
Example of Solid State
USB memory sticks, Solid State Drives and SDHC memory card
17 of 22
Example of Magnetic Storage
A hard disk,

Example of Optical Storage
CD, DVD and Blu-ray disks

What is cloud storage?
The use of the Internet to store files and provide software, aka 'the cloud'
20 of 22
Advantages of Cloud Storage?
can connect from any device, easy to increase how much storage available, cloud host provides secirty and backups for you
21 of 22
Disadvantages of Cloud Storage?
need connection from the internet, dependant on host for secuity/backups, data in the cloud can be vulnerable to hackers
