What are Wireless Access Points?
Allow devices to connect to the LAN wirelessly. Public WAPs are called hotspots. Less secure than wired connections
6 of 14
What do routers do?
Can act as a switch for form a LAN of devices. Can connect one network to another e.g. a LAN to the Internet or network paths to other network paths on the Internet. They route packets according to the destination IP address and common routes.

What do switches do?
Connects devices on a network together to one point; it inspects data arriving at the switch, makes a dedicated connection to the right destination and sends the data to that destination. Avoids collisions of data on the network
8 of 14
What do hubs do?
Like a switch in that it acts as a central connection for devices. However, it broadcasts traffic from the server to all devices rather than making a connection to the device it was intended for, so inefficient and creates unnecessary traffic.

What does an NIC do?
Allows a computer to connect to the Network. Has a unique MAC address identifying that device. Allows an Ethernet cable to be plugged into it.

What is the DNS?
The Domain Name Server has a table of Domain Names (e.g. bbc.co.uk) and their associated IP addresses so we can type in a URL instead of remembering IP addresses (e.g. 243.142.55.12)

What is Hosting?
Makes a website available, the domain name is registered and hosted on a Server; it is given an entry into a DNS table with its IP address

What is the Cloud?
It is just the collection of Servers on the Internet that hold files and data and run applications. You can access the cloud from anywhere in the world.
