What are the differences between ROM and RAM?
RAM is read from and written to, RAM is also volatile (loses values when power turned off) either DDR or cheaper, slower SDRAM. RAM is inside the CPU, whilst ROM is Read-only Memory, it is non-volatile.
1 of 10
What is the purpose of ROM?
ROM contains instructions run by the CPU to boot up the Computer called the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)
2 of 10
What is the purpose of RAM?
Holds data and instructions that are being processed by the CPU, every open program is held in RAM.
3 of 10
What is the need for Virtual Memory?
Virtual Memory is an area on secondary storage (e.g. hard disk) used temporarily like RAM when RAM is full. It is slower than actual RAM.

What is Flash Memory?
Solid State storage that is non Volatile. It is use for the ROM. Flash is re-writeable but using an electrical charge. It has no moving parts.
5 of 10
Why do we need Secondary Storage?
Secondary storage is permanent storage for programs and data e.g. hard disk.
6 of 10
What is optical storage?
Read/write using a laser e.g. CD, DVD, Blue-Ray Each 0 and 1 is a pit or land etched into the surface.
7 of 10
What is magnetic storage?
Read/Write using a magnetic read/write head e.g. Hard disk, magnetic tape. Each 0 and 1 is a positive or negative magnetic charge.
8 of 10
What is solid state memory?
Flash memory read/write using electrical charge to re-programme. E.g. main secondary storage in tablets & phones; SD Cards Cameras, portable USB sticks. 0’s and 1’s are held in switches that have a voltage or none.
