what is hardware?
It is the physical components of the computer system.
1 of 25
What is the ALU?
It is the arithmetic and logic unit.
2 of 25
What does the ALU do?
It carries out all of the arithmetic and logical operations.
3 of 25
What does the control unit do?
It uses electrical signals to control the flow of data within the CPU.
4 of 25
State the fetch execute cycle.
Fetch an instruction from memory , decode the instruction to find out what processing to do, execute the instruction.
5 of 25
What is the boot sequence?
It is a sequence of processes that contains all the information and instructions to get the computer up and running.
6 of 25
What is the boot loader?
a program that starts the boot sequence when it is switched on.
7 of 25
What does the CPU's speed depend on?
The clock speed, cache memory and the number of processor cores.
8 of 25
what is the clock speed measured in ?
hertz.
9 of 25
what are processor speeds measured in?
gigahertz.
10 of 25
cache memory is very...
expensive.
11 of 25
What is the advantage of multi-core processors?
more data is processed simultaneously.
12 of 25
what is the disadvantage of multi-core processors?
More complicated operating systems are needed to manage them.
13 of 25
what is RAM?
random access memory.
14 of 25
RAM is volatile. What does this mean?
Data is lost from it when it is switched off.
15 of 25
What is ROM?
Read only memory .
16 of 25
ROM is non-volatile. What does this mean?
Data is retained when the power is switched off.
17 of 25
What is virtual memory?
Virtual memory, sometimes called a pagefile or "swap space" is an area on the hard drive that is used as extra memory. Information from physical memory (l RAM) is swapped in and out of virtual memory when the Operating System needs it
18 of 25
How can one reduce the use of virtual memory?
By increasing RAM.
19 of 25
Why is virtual memory bad?
It slows down the computer.
20 of 25
Flash memory is a type of ........... that can be rewritten .
ROM.
21 of 25
All computers work in....... and use simple....... ........ to make calculations.
Binary, Logic circuits.
22 of 25
Name 3 input devices.
Keyboard, Mouse and camera.
23 of 25
Name 3 output devices.
Monitor, printer and speakers.
24 of 25
Why is secondary storage needed?
It is needed to store data and programs when the power is switched off.
