Computing - Fundamentals of Computing Systems

?
System
Inputs -> Processes -> Outputs. Small, versatile, cheap, programmable
1 of 11
Embedded System
Dedicated computer system that is fixed to one purpose
2 of 11
IT Failure Reasons
Time scale too short. Not specified properly. Too many interested parties.
3 of 11
Proprietary Standards
Owned by the company. Look and feel familiar. Work in a predictable way. Be maintained by one company which means free updates.
4 of 11
Industry Standards
Been agreed across a company's industry. Like USB for example.
5 of 11
De Facto Standards
Developed through common use. PDF started as proprietary and then moved to this. HTML became de jure from de facto.
6 of 11
Open Standards
Publicly available. Source code is in the public domain. Software can be developed by users. Of a high quality and regular free updates. No one to blame when things go wrong.
7 of 11
Ethical Considerations
Not undertaking work that is beyond capabilities. Not taking bribes. Avoid injuring others.
8 of 11
Environmental Considerations - Energy
Energy is wasted in generation of heat. Air conditioning in data centres use a lot of energy. Supplies of energy are finite and expensive
9 of 11
Environmental Considerations - Disposal
E-waste is old computer equipment which is harmful because of the toxins residing in it. Safe disposal of e-waste is an ongoing argument.
10 of 11
Legal Considerations (LAWS)
Data Protection Act 1998 - protect people's privacy. Computer Misuse Act 1990 - illegal to gain unauthorised access or change information on a computer system. Not all countries agree and the international aspect of Internet causes legal confusions.
