Hardware
The physical electrical components of a computer system.(Motherboard, Printer)
1 of 17
Software
Sequence of instructions that execute on a computers hardware to perform a specific task (database, word processing etc.)
2 of 17
Input device
Provides data into the computer (e.g Mouse, keyboard, webcam etc)
3 of 17
Output device
Used to present data from a computer (e.g Monitor (VDU), Printer etc)
4 of 17
Internal component
Electrical and physical components within the computer itself (E.g RAM stick, motherboard etc.)
5 of 17
External components
Components 'plugged' into the computer. (E.g External HDD, USB stick etc.)
6 of 17
Peripheral device
A device not directly connected to the CPU
7 of 17
Three box model
Proccessor, Main memory, input-output devices. All connected by a 'bus'
8 of 17
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Shortened to processor, the 'brains' of a computer which performs tasks and management.
9 of 17
Main memory (RAM) (Random Access Memory)
Instructions and data are held here while the computer is running. 'Ordinary memory' lost when switched off.
10 of 17
ROM (Read Only Memory)
Non volatile, info permanently etched. Like 'RAM but read only'. Used with 'bootstrap loader' containing loading instructions for the operating software
11 of 17
Auxiliary Storage
Devices used for long term storage of data. E.g. Compact discs, Hard disk drives, flash memory drives & DAT storage devices.
12 of 17
Application software
Non volitile, Used to perform tasks that are independent of the computer (real world tasks, user orientates tasks.)
13 of 17
System software
Software that performs tasks to run on the computers hardware. (Machine orientated tasks)
14 of 17
Operating systems (The virtual Machines)
Designed to hide the complexities of the hardware from the user
15 of 17
Scheduling
An order of processes that are run completely, one after another by a processor.
16 of 17
Time slicing
The allocation of small amounts of processing time to each process by the processor, giving the appearance of multi-tasking.
