What three things affect peformance?
Clock speed
Size of the cache
The number of cores
1 of 25
What does the size of the cache do?
The tiny bit of memory on the side of the CPU, aids the memory
2 of 25
What does the clock speed effect?
The clock speed, clock speed is measured in megahertz (MHz) - the number of fetch/execute cycles per second
3 of 25
What does the number of cores effect?
The number of cores, number of processors executing instructions each cycle
4 of 25
RISC
RISC - Reduced instruction set computer/ fewer instructions but more efficient at simple tasks/has less power, runs cooler/tends to be cheaper to mass produce/ runs at lower clock speed.
5 of 25
CISC
CISC - Complex instruction set computer, physically larger, more instructions.
6 of 25
Control Unit
Control Unit - tells the instructions to go
7 of 25
ALU
ALU - arithmetic logic unit, handles all logical and maths operations
8 of 25
Registers
Registers - hold the other smaller registers
9 of 25
ACC
ACC - accumulator
10 of 25
PC
PC - program counter
11 of 25
MAR
MAR - Memory address register
12 of 25
MDR
MDR - Memory data register
13 of 25
CIR
CIR - Current instruction register
14 of 25
Data bus
Data bus, lane data is sent along
15 of 25
Address bus
Address bus, main memory fetches data
16 of 25
Control bus
Control bus, controls everything
17 of 25
Storage
Storage - primary storage is volatile, lost data when power is lost
18 of 25
Secondary storage/Hard drive
Secondary storage/Hard drive - non volatile programs saved as well as the documents
19 of 25
Random access memory (RAM)
Volatile memory
20 of 25
Read only memory (ROM)
Shouldn't be changed for the risk of damage to the computer.
21 of 25
Flash memory
Permanent storage of data, but can be changed
22 of 25
Cache memory
The small memory near the CPU
23 of 25
Non volatile
secondary storage is volatile
24 of 25
Optical
This codes data using microscopic dips on the surface of the disk.

a laser passes over these dips and reads them as data.
