Computer hardware

?
Name and describe the main components of the CPU
The control unit manages the execution of instructions by using the fetch-execute cycle. The ALU processes data that requires arithmetic calculations to be carried out. The IAS stores all programs and data temporarily whilst they are in use.
1 of 9
explain the difference between the MAR and the MDR
The current instruction or data being executed is temporarily stored in the MAR. All data transferred from main memory to the CPU goes via the MDR.
2 of 9
Describe how clock speed influences the performance of a computers processor.
The clock speed is an indicator of the speed at which the CPU can operate.
3 of 9
State two advantages of using a touchscreen as an input device.
Little ICT competence required compared to using a keyboard. Selecting and entering options much faster than using a keyboard.
4 of 9
State two disadvantages of using a microphone to input data to a computer system.
The recognition rate of spoken words can be low if there is backround noise. Sound files require greater storage capacity than a text file.
5 of 9
Briefly describe the main features of a 3D printer.
A 3D printer can print onto a variety of surfaces. It prints one layer at a time and it is mainly used to create prototypes of real objects.
6 of 9
Name and describe two types of solid-state storage devices.
USB memory sticks are a type of solid-state storage and are attractive to users as they are compact, portable and contain a large storage capacity, this is the same with rotating discs.
7 of 9
Explain the difference between ROM and RAM
RAM can be read or written to. It is volatile which means the contents of the memory are lost when the machine is switched off. ROM can be read but not written to. Programs stored on ROM are permanent.
8 of 9
Explain the purpose of cache memory
Cache memory is a type of memory used by the CPU and is similar to RAM in that instructions can be read or written.
