What are some advantages of networking stand-alone computers into a local area network?
Central data storage makes data sharing possible and makes backups easier to do, computer use can be easily monitored and users can communicate

What hardware is needed to connect stand-alone computers into a LAN?
Network interface controllers/cards, cables, hubs, switches and routers
2 of 19
What are network interface controllers/cards?
Every NIC has a MAC address stored in ROM and this allows each node on a network to be identified and it generates and receives suitable electrical signals
3 of 19
What are hubs?
Hardware devices that connect many network devices together, making them into a single network segment
4 of 19
What are switches?
They connect network segments or devices. They can also act as bridges which connect more than one network
5 of 19
What are routers?
They allow connection to a LAN without the need for physical cables. They receive data in the form packets and forwards them to their destination which is often another router

List three network topologies:
Bus, star, ring
7 of 19
What is a protocol?
A set of rules that covers data communications
8 of 19
What are packets?
Collections of data forming part of a message that is constructed according to the rules laid down by the appropriate protocol
9 of 19
What fields do packets contain?
Protocol, checksum, total length, sender's address, receiver's address, time to live, packet number and data
10 of 19
What is an IP address?
It is a 32-bit number that is the address for the data packet being delivered
11 of 19
What is a MAC address?
It is given as six pairs of hexadecimal numbers that can be used to identify a device on a network

What is the internet?
It is a means of connecting millions of computers and computer networks across the world
13 of 19
What is the world wide web?
One of the facilities that makes use of the internet. It consists of billions of pages written in HTML
14 of 19
What are modems used for?
It converts phone links, which are analogue to digital signals, which computers use and it allows connect to the internet on the POTS

What is the DNS?
The Domain Name System is a protocol that connects IP addresses to user friendly names
16 of 19
What is HTML used for?
Hypertext Markup Language is a way of using text files in order to describe a web page. HTML uses tags to instruct a browser how to interpret and display items on a web page.

What is lossy compression?
It works by removing some of the data from the file and this data cannot be recovered
18 of 19
What is lossless compression?
It does not store repeated detail but it allows the original file to be reconstructed exactly.
