What is a Register in CPU?
A storage area INSIDE the CPU (hence fast)
1 of 13
Name some registers
PC, MAR, MDR, CIR, CU.
2 of 13
Name the 3 Buses
Control, Address, Data Bus
3 of 13
Describe the role of the Control Bus
Transmits control signals from the Control Unit to other parts of the processor.
4 of 13
Describe the role of the Data Bus
Carries the data from one place to another
5 of 13
Describe the role of the Address Bus
Carries the location address where the data is going (to or from).
6 of 13
Describe the rle of the Control Unit - 3 points
1) Decodes Instructions 2) Sends Control Signals to execute instructions 3) Controls Buses
7 of 13
Describe the role of the ALU - 1 point
Performs all the Logical and Arithmetic Operations in the Processor.
8 of 13
Role of Accumulator
Temporarily stores the results of calcuations carried out by the ALU and Data inputted by user.
9 of 13
Role of CIR
Holds the instruction while it is being decoded; contents split into 2 parts; Opcode is first part to CU knows what to do, Operand is address to be used on.
10 of 13
Role of MAR
Contains address of the next location to be accessed in the memory. 1) May be the address of next instruction COPIED from pc OR 2) Address of next daa item to be used copied from address of instruction from CIR.
11 of 13
Role of MDR
Contains contents of address in MAR; contents may be an instruction or data to be used with an instruction or data to be copied into an address.
12 of 13
Describe PC
Contains address OF next instruction to be carried out.
