Component 1 - Computer Science (2)

?
SMTP -
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol / Allows emails to be sent to an email server where they are held
1 of 13
POP3 -
Post Office Protocol / Does not keep the client and the server in sync / Downloads emails from the email server and deletes them from the email server
2 of 13
IMAP -
Internet Message Access Protocol / Maintains the client and server connection / Allows a copy of the email to be copied and downloaded whilst keeping the original email in the email server
3 of 13
Von Neumann Architecture -
Data can be stored in main memory which allows for multitasking / Used in Computers today
4 of 13
Harvard Architecture -
Uses 2 locations for the storage of memory and has no enclosed CPU
5 of 13
ASCII -
Uses 7 bit representation (A maximum of 128 representations) so cannot store symbols on a keyboard
6 of 13
Unicode -
Uses hexadecimal for character representation and so can represent more characters than ASCII
7 of 13
Hub -
A hub receives data packets and forwards them to all nodes in the network
8 of 13
Switch -
A switch receives data packets and forwards them to the correct node
9 of 13
Router -
A router is responsible for forwarding packets between networks
10 of 13
Modem -
Converts Digital signals into analogue ones
11 of 13
IP address -
A unique identification of a computer on a network allowing the computer to communicate on the network
12 of 13
