What is a stimulus?
any change in the environment that causes a response
1 of 16
What is a response?
A change in behavior or physiology as a result of a change in environment
2 of 16
What is cell signalling?
A process where one cell releases a chemical that is detected by another cell, which then responds to the signal released from the first cell
3 of 16
What is the neuronal system?
An interconnected network of neurones that signal each other across synapse junctions with rapid responses
4 of 16
What is the hormonal system?
A system that uses the blood to transport signals by releasing a hormone which is then recognized by a target cell
5 of 16
What is Negative feedback?
A process in which any change in a parameter brings about the reversal of that change so the parameter is kept fairly constant
6 of 16
What is Homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment despite external changes
7 of 16
What are Receptors?
They detect stimuli and some are cells or proteins on cell membranes
8 of 16
What is an Effector?
They are cells that bring about a response to a stimulus to produce an effect
9 of 16
What is an Ectotherm?
An organism that relies on external sources of heat to regulate its body temperature
10 of 16
What is an Endotherm?
An organism that can control the loss and production of heat to regulate body temperature
11 of 16
Where is the Hypothalamus?
The Brain
12 of 16
If there is a RISE in body temperature does the Hypothalamus...
Send signals to effector cells and cause Vadodilation, Sweating and No adrenaline released
13 of 16
If there is a FALL in body temperature does the Hypothalamus...
Send signals to effector cells and cause Vasoconstriction, Shivering and Adrenaline to be released
14 of 16
Which REDUCES body heat?
Sweating, Hairs lying flat and Vasodilation
15 of 16
Which INCREASES body heat?
Shivering, Less sweating and Vasoconstriction
