communicable Diseases

?
What is a pathogen?(1)
A microorganism that causes communicable diseases.
1 of 26
Name the different types of pathogens..(4)
Bacteria, Virus, Protist and Fungi
2 of 26
Name the ways pathogens are spread? (3)
Through air, water and direct contact.
3 of 26
Describe the bacteria cell.(3)
they're 1/100th size of body cells, reproduce rapidly, produce toxins that damage cells and tissues which make us feel ill.
4 of 26
How can pathogens be spread through water?(1)
By drinking or bathing in contaminated water.
5 of 26
Name a fungal disease and how its spread.(2)
Rose Black Spot - spread in the environment through wind and water.
6 of 26
Describe the virus pathogen.(4)
1/100th size of bacteria cells, NOT CELLS, reproduce rapidly inside body cells using their machinery causing the cell to burst, the cell damage is what makes us feel ill.
7 of 26
What is measles and its severity? (3)
Viral disease spread by droplets when an infected person sneezes/coughs, can be fatal if there are complications such as Pneumonia or encephalitis lung or brain infection.
8 of 26
How can pathogens be spread through Air?(2)
Pathogens can be carried in the air and breathed in, some are in water droplets from a cough or sneeze.
9 of 26
What is a protist? (3)
A protist is a single celled Eukaryote, some are parasites that live in/on organism causing damage, transfered by a vector.
10 of 26
What is a Vector?(1)
Animal that carries the pathogen by isn't affected by it.
11 of 26
What is the difference between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes?
Eukaryotes are complex (animal and plant cells) Prokaryotes are smaller and simpler.
12 of 26
Name a protist disease and how its spread.(2)
Malaria - spread by mosquito inserting the parasite into any animal it feeds on blood vessels.
13 of 26
What are the symptoms/affects of Rose black spot?(3)
Purple or black spots will appear on the leaves of rose plants which can turn yellow and drop off, this mans less photosynthesis can happen which means the plant can't grow as well,
14 of 26
How can we treat Rose black spot? (2)
Using Fungicides and ********* the plant of its infected leaves and destroying them.
15 of 26
Describe the Hyphae? (3)
Thread like structure which can grow and penetrate human skin causing disease, produce spores that spread the disease.
16 of 26
Describe the Fungus pathogen? (2)
Some are single celled, others have a body called Hyphae.
17 of 26
How can Pathogens be spread through Direct contact?(1)
Touching contaminated surfaces such as the skin.
18 of 26
Name a disease spread by exchanging bodily fluids (water)?(2)
HIV - viral disease spread through sexual contact and sharing needles when taking drugs.
19 of 26
What are the symptoms of measles and how do we treat it? (2)
Red skin rash and fever, most people in the uk are vaccinated against it when they're young.
20 of 26
What are the symptoms of HIV and how can it be treated?
There are flu-like symptoms for a few weeks then none for years this early stage can be treated using Antiretroviral drugs.
21 of 26
What does HIV do to your body and what are its long-term affects?
HIV attacks the immune cells can cause it damage.
22 of 26
What is Late stage HIV?
AIDs when the immune system is badly damaged it can't cope with other infections or cancers.
23 of 26
Name there viral diseases?
HIV, Measles and Tobacco Mosaic Virus
24 of 26
What are the symptoms of Malaria and how it can be prevented?
Its symptoms are repeating episodes of fever- can be fatal,People can use insecticides and mosquito nets to prevent being bitten, Stopping mosquitos breeding reduces spread.
25 of 26
Explain why plant with discolouration may have stunted growth
It may have TMV - viral disease that causes discolouration/mosaic pattern on plat leaves which prevents photosynthesis and means the plant can't grow as well.
