Colony
An area of a country that is controlled by another country, and occupied by its settlers.

Puritan
A Protestant who was strict in their religious beliefs, who opposed Catholics.

Indigenous Peoples
People who are native to their country.

Autonomy
The right of an area to govern itself.

Absolutist Government
A government in which absolute power is possessed by one ruling figure, meaning they cannot be challenged.

Divine Right of Kings
The idea that a King is given the right to rule by God, and so he cannot be challenged, as that would be a sin.

Indentured Servitude
The period for which a person who travelled to America had to work to pay for their passage. This was usually 4-7 years.

Charters
Documents written by the monarch that legally granted land.

The Mayflower
The ship carrying the Pilgrim Fathers over 3000 miles to America in 1620.
