What is activation energy?
The minimum energy that particles need to react. the minimum energy they transfer when they collide is known as the activation energy.
1 of 8
What is collision theory?
Rates of reaction depend on frequency of collisions and the energy transferred during each collision.
2 of 8
What does the rate of a reaction depend upon?
Temperature, concentration pressure for gases and size of particles for solids.
3 of 8
Explain rates of reaction using collision theory.
Rates of reaction depend on frequency of collisions and the energy transferred during each collision. The minimum energy that particles need to react when they collide is known as the activation energy.
4 of 8
Why does temperature increase the rate of reaction?
outline collision theory. Particles gain energy so move faster causing more collisions increasing rate. More particles have energies more than activation energy - increases rate
5 of 8
How does concentration increase the rate of reaction?
outline collision theory. More particles of reactant in the same volume make collisions more likely - increases reaction rate.
6 of 8
How does pressure in gases increase the rate of reaction?
outline collision theory. Less space to move around making collisions more likely - increases rate of reaction
7 of 8
How does size of particles in solids increase the rate of reaction?
smaller the size of particles, the greater the surface area to volume ratio. Greater area to collide with - increases frequency of collisions and rate.
