Cognitive psychology

?
What was the aim of the practical?
To see if using different slave systems affects word recall
1 of 12
What was the independent variable?
The two different tasks; the word search or the spot the difference
2 of 12
What was the dependent variable?
The amount of words recalled out of 15
3 of 12
What was the method?
Each student was read 15 words out loud before being given either a word search or a spot the difference as a distractor task. They then had two minutes to recall as many words as possible
4 of 12
What were the results of the study?
Those that had the spot the difference distractor task ( the visual task ) were able to recall more words easier
5 of 12
What was concluded from the practical?
That the two slave systems affect word recall differently. The acoustic system affected it more than the visual
6 of 12
What data was collected and why was this a strength?
Quantitative data was collected meaning it can be analysed easier and graphed making the results more reliable
7 of 12
Why is it a strength that its an independent measures design?
Because it removes the risk of order effects as they only complete one tasks meaning the results will be as accurate as possible
8 of 12
Why is the method a strength?
Because it was standardised meaning it can be repeated to compare results which makes it more reliable and credible as a study
9 of 12
What makes the sample a weakness?
It is a small sample from the same environment which means it cannot be applied to those outside of the college
10 of 12
Why does the study lack ecological validity?
Because it does not reflect how memory works in real life, you don't get given random words and a distractor task
11 of 12
Why are there individual differences?
Because one student may have a better memory that another which makes the results less valid
