What does the model suggest?
Once something enters our sensory store from our senses and we pay ATTENTION to it it enters our STM. If we rehearse it, it enters our LTM and can be retrieved back to the STM with a trigger
1 of 7
How is the STM encoded, how much can it hold and how long does it hold it?
Encoded- acoustically. Capacity- 5-9 items (SE: Miller). Duration- 30 seconds (SE: Peterson and Peterson)
2 of 7
How is the LTM encoded, how much can it hold and how long does it hold it?
Encoded- Semantically. Capacity- Unlimited. Duration- Unlimited
3 of 7
How is the theory useful?
It helps explain how we can revise things and may explain why people cannot make new LTM
4 of 7
What study supports the theory?
Baddeley showed that the encoding of the STM and LTM are correct which makes the theory valid and more credible
5 of 7
What theories conflict this theory?
WMM is in more detail, showing that MSM cannot be the whole explanation for our memories
6 of 7
What is the problem with testing the theory?
Most evidence that supports the theory is lab based meaning it cannot represent real life so lacks mundane realism
