What is cognitive psychology and why is it important?
The study of mental processes, it plays an important role in the development & treatment of mental disorders.

Studying brain-damaged patients to understand normal human cognition

What is the information processing approach?
A stimulus is presented which causes certain internal cognitive processes to occur which produce this desired response

Describe bottom-up processing
Directly influenced by environmental stimuli

What is serial processing?
One process is completed before the next one starts

Describe top-down processing
Influenced by factors such as an individuals past experiences & expectations

What is parallel processing?
More than one process occurs at the same time, we are much more likely to use this when performing a highly practiced task than a new one eg driving (multitasking).

Evaluate cognitive processes
Good for understanding brain-damaged patients, huge influence, but people's behaviour in labs may differ from that in real life & theories tend be vague.
