Geiselman and Fisher

4 techniques used in the CI
Report everything
Reinstate the context
Change in perspective
Change the order of events
2 of 12
Explain what is meant by 'Report Everything'
say everything you can remember about the event; cues maybe used to help recall.
3 of 12
Explain what is meant by 'Reinstate the Context'
thinking back to the event and imagining yourself being there again -> linked to context-dependent forgetting (preventing it).
4 of 12
Explain what is meant by 'Change in Perspective'
imagining yourself in another person's view of things - imagine what they would think -> reduces bias
5 of 12
Explain what is meant by 'Change the order of events'
used to prevent schemas and false information being reported.

Key Study of CI (A01)
(Geiselman et al)
-Lab study -> 240 participants (pps)
conditions: standard interview (120 pps), CI interview (120pps)
Watched robbery video
Findings: CI interviewed people -> 35% more accurate recall.
7 of 12
Enhanced Cognitive Interview
Used to enhance the techniques to further increase recall
-reducing distraction -> prevent interference
-calming witness down -> rational thinking

(1) (A03) Evidence to support cognitive interview
Milne and Bull
-combination of report everything and reinstating the context significantly increased recall.
Applications to real life -> helps police know which techniques to use to get accurate info.
CI techniques are time consuming so using only 2 tech

(2) (A03) Applications to real life
-CI is widely used today -> police investigations
-Geiselman et al: 16 detective interviews with witnesses -> 7 detectives trained with CI, other not.
Researchers analysed interviews -> blind conditions
Findings: CI interviews -> 63% more info obtained.

(2) (A03) Applications to real life - Limitation
Limitation -> ignores individual differences in skill of conducting interviews -> detectives in this study may have been very good at using CI so results were positive -> but means CI effectiveness is down to detective's skill, not the CI -> reduces inter

(3) (A03) Evidence to refute the CI
Kohnken et al
Meta-analysis of 53 studies using CI.
Found that there was a 34% increase in the amount of correct information recalled -> supports CI.
BUT also 61% increase in the amount of incorrect information recalled -> refutes CI. This may be due to
