Define: Coding data

1) Coding data usually means shortening the origional data

1) Speeds up data entry - "Female" encoded = "F" 2) Increases accuracy of data entry - "female" = data to be entered, "Femal" is entered, by encoding the data to "F" cuts down the risk of a spelling mistake 3) validation can improve accuracy

1) Coarsening of code- the house is "Light blue" but "blue" is entered to represent the colour of the house 2) obscured data - e.g Switzerland = "CHE" many people wouldnt recognise, or be able to interperate the code
