What is biological weathering?
Biological weatehring is the organic process of weathering that breaks down rocks or the ground surface
1 of 11
How does biological weathering occur?
1. Plant roots burrow to find nutrients/food. 2. Bacteria produces chemical compounds that breaks down rocks to find food. 3. Animals search for shelter/food.
2 of 11
3 examples of causes for biological weathering?
1. Algae 2. Lichens 3. Piddock shells
3 of 11
What is physical weathering?
Physical weathering is the disruption of rocks and surfaces due to the weather
4 of 11
Causes of physical weathering?
1. Freeze thaw 2. Temperature change 3. Exfoliation 4. Wind and rain
5 of 11
What is freeze thaw?
Freeze thaw is when water in a rock crack freezes and the gap expands. This is repeated until the rock splits completely
6 of 11
What is temperature change?
Rocks exoand in hot weather and contract in cold weather which causes parts to fall off, which leads to freeze thaw
7 of 11
What is exfoliation?
The outer layer of rock is heated during the day and expands, and then contracts at night due to falling temerature. This constant expanding/contracting causes the top layer to fall off
8 of 11
How does rain and wind contribute to weathering?
Wind blows particles of sand into the rocks and causes friction, leading to erosion. Rain has a similar effect to hydraulic action in weathering.
9 of 11
What is chemical weathering?
Chemical weathering is when rain water reacts with the mineral grains in rocks to form new minerals
10 of 11
How does chemical weathering occur?
High temperature and slightly acidic rain reacts with the rocks and it dissolves
